James H. Kilgore, Sr.

James H. “Jim” Kilgore, Sr., 75, of Palatka, passed away Friday, April 12, 2019 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka following a brief illness.

Born at home in the Moodyville Community in Palatka, Jim was a 1964 graduate of Palatka Senior High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Army (stationed in Germany) and served 28 years in the Florida National Guard. In 2005 he retired from the Florida Department of Transportation in Tampa after 33 years of service. He helped to build highways, including I-75 going through Alligator Alley in South Florida, where he gained the nickname of “Gator”. He worked mostly as an inspector. He had also worked for Palatka Welding and the former Deputy Printing in Palatka. He served as president of Lodge 37, Woodmen of the World, in Tampa and belonged to the American Legion, Post 45 in Palatka. He enjoyed fishing and automotive repair and was a member of Harvest Baptist Church in Palatka. On February 22nd he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Corky Bell’s where he was surrounded by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Margaret Reeves Kilgore; a sister, Pauline Tomlinson; two brothers, Charles Kilgore and Raymond Kilgore, Jr., and a grandson, James Kilgore III.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon Coleman Kilgore of Palatka; three sons and daughters-in-law, James, Jr. “Jamie” and Sharon Kilgore of Palatka, Jonathan “Jon” and Veronica Kilgore of Lutz, FL, and Joseph Hal “Joey” Kilgore of Palatka; three adopted sons, Matt Rutledge of Orlando, Scott Hagen of Zephyrhills; and Donnie Hines of Wesley Chapel; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Jean Kilgore of Tampa, Gary and Patricia Kilgore of Arkansas, and Stanley Kilgore of Jacksonville; two sisters-in-law, Priscilla Kilgore of Palatka and Shirley Kilgore of St. Augustine; four grandchildren, Samantha Kilgore of St. Augustine, Christopher Kilgore, Michael Kilgore, and Katie Kilgore, all of Lutz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka with Pastor Jeff Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
