Melvin Louis Register, Jr.
December 4, 1963 - January 31, 2020

Melvin Louis Register, Jr. (Mel) - completed his earthly journey on Friday, January 31, 2020 at theCustead Haven Hospice House in Orange Park, Florida.
Melvin was born to Grace Register and the late Melvin L. Register, Sr., on December 4, 1963 at Glendale Hospital in Palatka, Florida. He lived in Bardin and attended Putnam County Public Schools until he began serving his country in the U.S. Armed Forces.
While he was stationed at Dover AFB in Delaware, he met the love of his life, Mabel Jean Pierson, and married her on July 3rd, 1984.
He was then stationed at Kadena AFB n Okinawa, Japan, and was a proud member of the 67th Fighter Squadron, 18th Wing, affectionately known as the 67th Squadron Fighting Cocks.
While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, his daughter, Kimberly was born.
He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force the following year and brought his family home to Putnam County, specifically, Palatka. He was then employed with the City of Palatka Water Treatment Plant where he advanced to the position of Superintendent. He faithfully served the citizens of the city of Palatka for 32 years until he retired in 2018. He also diligently served his co-workers and other city employees for many years by serving on the Employees Pension Board until he was forced to resign his position due to failing health. In addition to serving the citizens of Palatka, he also served many citizens in the unincorporated areas of Putnam County by servicing water works to ensure the availability of clean water through his private business, H2Operations for more than 20 years.
Melvin was very passionate about family and genealogy of his Register Family. He had been Past President, Vice President, Treasurer of the Register Family Association and had just recently resigned his position of Chairman of the Board due to his declining health. He also held the very proud position as President of the Palatka Olive Club that he created for his granddaughters.
Around 1993, Melís love of music and songwriting led him to help form a local band called Dryvet. After a short time, Mel and his brother-in-love, David, joined a band called BloodShot where he enjoyed playing, singing, and writing music. He loved playing local gigs with this band and they produced a CD of their music. He enjoyed his time in BloodShot and continued to play and sing and write with it as it morphed into a band called Scathe.
As much as he enjoyed all of these things, what brought him the greatest joy were his children and his grandchildren, who were not only his biologically, but he loved all children, cared for them like they were his and wanted the best for them. This love of children led him to his very beloved role as Santa Claus. He made numerous appearances each year as Santa to whomever requested his presence. And though he appeared at many, many functions for the city and other businesses over the years, his heart was always for the children. The only thing that could keep him from performing these appearances was his quickly declining health.
Melvin is preceded in death by his father, Melvin L. Register, Sr. and his grandson, Alan River Hurst.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mabel; his daughter, Kimberly; his granddaughters, Autumn Mabel, Leighanna Michelle, and Izabella Grace; his mother, Grace Register; his sister, Michelle (Rob)Glenn; his sister-in-love, Linda Suzzane Kirsch; brother-in-love, Thomas Pierson, III; sister-in-love, Andrea Cozine; brother-in-love, Joseph (Cindy) Pierson; sister-in-love, Renee (Hoss) Markel; brother-in-love, David (Tonya) Cozine; and numerous nieces and nephews.
