Helen Walker Carter

Helen Evelyn Lillian Walker Carter, 97, of Palatka, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at Solaris Health Care in Palatka. Helen was born in Long Island, New York on March 19, 1923. She was the second oldest sibling in her family. At an early age, Helen began her lifelong mission of caring for others. Her mother passed away unexpectantly after the birth of her youngest sibling and Helen helped her father raise her siblings. During World War II, she worked for Grumman Aircraft as a “Rosie the Riveter”. In her early 20’s, she along with her father and siblings relocated to Palatka, Florida where she met her future husband, John Walker (JW).

In 1945, she married John and they had three children, Patricia, Susan and John II. During her married years, she worked in the cafeterias at Moseley Elementary School and Campbell Elementary School and later in the bridal department at Belk Department Store in Palatka, FL. In addition, she helped raise multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family brought her the greatest joy.

She enjoyed gardening both at her private residence and later at Solaris Health Care. During her time at Solaris Health Care, she carried on her lifelong mission of caring for others; whether it was through her beautiful garden that she tended to, assisting other residents, or participating in activities such as dancing, singing and games. She was a social butterfly and never met a stranger.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Helen Benka, husbands John W. Walker, Sr. and H.O. Carter; four brothers, Frank Benka, Jr., Allen Benka, Eugene Benka and Thomas Benka and a sister, June Pike.

She is survived by her three children, Patricia Marie Suckow (Tommy) of Corinth, Mississippi, Susan June Fox (Fred) of St. Augustine, Fl and John Wesley Walker, Jr. (Ava) of San Mateo, FL; a sister, Dolores Smith of Michigan; nine grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Friday, June 26, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. at Master’s Funeral Home of Palatka, with Pastor Ted Rodda, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
