Margaret Alice Smith-Goodin
Margaret Alice Smith-Goodin
October 30, 1933 - March 14, 2012

On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, God called Margaret Alice Smith-Goodin, 78, of Palatka, by her name. She lost her battle with cancer.

Born in Palatka to parents, Dan and Geneva Massey Smith, she resided in Palatka for most of her life. Margaret grew up in Peniel and graduated from Mellon High School in 1952. She moved to Jacksonville in 1956 for employment reasons where she met and married Paul Goodin. While living in Jacksonville, she daily wrote a letter to her mother. Margaret returned to Palatka in 1996 to live and care for her ailing mother.

She was known by Maggie to some, her sisters called her “Baby”, her family called her Margaret Alice. By any name, she exemplified love. Margaret Alice loved and cared for her family but her compassion and generosity did not end at the family home door. It extended way beyond to others. A down to earth person, she was always caring, doing for and giving to others. While attending to her mother daily in the nursing home, she compassionately cared for other patients even when she was being treated for cancer herself.

She did not accept praise very well. She would quickly say, “I am just a sinner saved by the Grace of God.” She believed to love and serve God, we must love and care for each other; thereby, paying forward the gift of God’s love for us all. She lived by one of her favorite chapters in the Holy Bible, I Corithians 13, where it speaks of loving God, loving each other and the love never dies.

Her family was very special to her. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In 1997 she retired from the Anheuser-Bush Brewery in Jacksonville after 26 years of service as a lab technician. She was a member of the Peniel Baptist Church in Palatka. Margaret loved her church and her church family. Her family and friends who knew her so well, will miss her wit and great attitude.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Goodin; her father, Dan Smith; her mother, Geneva Peterman; and son-in-law, Michael Ireland.

Margaret Alice is survived by her daughter, Joy Ireland of Palatka; two sisters, Evelyn Smith Wynaught (Charlie) and Patti Petermann Cannon (Robbie); two grandchildren, Michael Kersey (Catherine) and Stephanie Boone (Chris); four great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Alice Ireland, Cameron, Kyler and Caden Kersey; three step children, Earl Goodin (Faye), Jerome Goodin and Jan Goodin Harrelson.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 16, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the funeral home with Pastor Eddie Humes, Pastor Bill Wing and Pastor Benny Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in Peniel Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully accepted or memorial donations may be sent to the Building Fund, Peniel Baptist Church, 5227 Silver Lake Dr., Palatka, FL 32177
