Doris C. Simmons

Doris Cheshire Simmons, 91, of Palatka passed away Saturday, April 6, 2019, at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehab in St. Augustine following an extended illness.

She was born in East Palatka and spent her childhood years in South Florida graduating from Okeechobee High School as Salutatorian in 1945. There she met her husband Malcolm Simmons and eventually moved to San Mateo, where they raised their two sons, Gary and Timmy. Doris was a much loved and dedicated employee of Georgia Pacific Corp. where she served as a Secretary in the Personnel Department for 32 years having retired in 1995. She was a devoted Christian and a member of First Assembly of God, Palatka, and then later, Victory Christian Fellowship, San Mateo. Doris took great pride in her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, but her proudest role was that as a child of God. She spent most of her days praying for those she loved and being our amazing Granny.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Cheshire; her mother, Zula Cheshire; her husband, Malcolm Simmons; her son, Timothy Simmons; her granddaughter, Kristy Lavigne; her brothers, Ralph Cheshire, Aubrey Cheshire and Leslie Cheshire; and her sisters, Lorraine Broer, Minnie Schneider, and Sybil Numrick.

She is survived by her son, Gary Simmons of Palatka; her daughter-in-law, Paula Simmons of Hollister; her grandchildren, Ashley McCool of Palatka, Zachary Simmons of Gainesville, and Kyle Simmons of East Palatka; her sister, June Hudson of Rogers, Arkansas; her great-grandchildren, Clay McCool, Rhett McCool, Chad Lavigne, Makayla Lavigne and Joshua Lavigne; her devoted friend, Barry Greenberg; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13th, at Masters Funeral Home with Doris’ nephew, Pastor David Tidwell of New Gloucester, Maine, officiating. Burial will follow at San Mateo Cemetery.

Messages of encouragement or sympathy may be expressed on her online guestbook at www.themastersfuneralhomes.com.

Masters Funeral Home of Palatka is in charge of the arrangements.
