Joseph E. “Joe” Thames, 69, of Palatka passed away Monday, April 8, 2019 at his residence following an extended illness
Born in Glendale Hospital, Joe was a native and lifelong resident of Palatka. He was a 1968 graduate of Palatka Senior High School. He honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict era and had been stationed in Korea. He had worked as an electrician in the construction trade and had worked all over Northeast Florida. Joe was a member and past Governor of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #184 in Palatka where he had held many offices. He enjoyed fishing and in his earlier days hunting. He also enjoyed woodworking and piddling (that was Joe’s description) in his garage and grilling hot dogs over a fire in the backyard with his family. Time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren was the highlight of his life. Joe and Brenda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Friday.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Ralph, Sr. and Erma Jean Thames.
Surviving are his loving wife, Brenda Murphy Thames of Palatka; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Laura and Barry Towery of Palatka and Christina and Doug Hunter of Palatka; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph, Jr. and Mary Thames of Georgia, Allen Thames of Kentucky, and Robert and Sheila Thames of Palatka; nine grandchildren, Chelsea Allen, Justin Dillmon, Katie Dillmon, Marissa Towery, Corey Kauffman, Zachary Kite, Austin Kite, Doug Hunter, Jr., and Brandon Hunter; ten great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will begin receiving friends at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 12th at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Bro. Maurice Sterling officiating. Joe’s Moose Lodge will minister during the service. Burial will follow in Oak Hill East Cemetery with military honors bestowed by the United States Army.
