GEORGE D. KNOWLES, JR.

SFC George D. Knowles, Jr., U.S. Army (ret.), 74, of East Palatka, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka following an extended illness.

George was born in Palatka and had been a lifelong resident of the area. He was a 1963 graduate of Palatka Senior High School. He served honorably in the United States Army and was a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and the 1st Gulf War. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965 and was sent to Vietnam, where he served a two-year stint. He was then hired by Southern Bell where he worked for 13 years. He then reenlisted in the U.S. Army, and upon retirement from the military with the rank of Sergeant First Class in 1998, he went to work for Bell South, later becoming AT&T, and retired from telecommunications in 2008.

He was a member of New Beginning Baptist Fellowship in Palatka and had been a longtime member of Open Bible Baptist Church, being part of one of the founding families of the church. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He loved kids and had been involved with children’s ministries in past years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Vida Knowles; and two sisters, Peggy Morris and Thesta Shell.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Lucille H. Knowles of East Palatka; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Michele Knowles of San Mateo; a daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and David Goldman of Celina, TX; two brothers and sister-in-law, Hoyt Knowles of Satsuma and James and Cheryl Knowles of Satsuma; a sister and brother-in-law, Rhonda and Chuck Brooks of Rutherfordton, NC; two grandchildren, Logan Knowles of San Mateo and Daniel Goldman of Celina, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at Palatka Memorial Gardens with Pastor Rick McClure officiating. Full military honors will be bestowed by the U.S. Army.
